How It Works

Our process for creating custom prosthetics for dogs in need

@adoptapawprosthetics

Our Approach

At Adopt-a-Paw, we've developed a comprehensive process for creating custom prosthetics that are perfectly tailored to each dog's unique needs. Each prosthetic costs around 500 euros to produce, which we offer commercially to owners who can afford them. For qualified individuals with financial constraints and animal shelters, we provide our prosthetics at no cost through our subsidized program, ensuring that no dog is denied mobility due to financial limitations.

Our approach combines veterinary expertise, advanced 3D printing technology, and careful adaptation training to ensure the best possible outcome for each dog. Here's how we do it:

The Process

1

Initial Assessment

We begin with a thorough evaluation of the dog's condition, including:

  • Veterinary examination to assess overall health and suitability for a prosthetic
  • Evaluation of the affected iimb and remaining musculature
  • Assessment of the dog's activity level, lifestyle, and specific needs
  • Discussion with the owner about expectations and care requirements

This comprehensive assessment helps us determine if a prosthetic is the right solution and what type of design will work best for the dog's specific situation.

2

Casting & Scanning

Once we determine a prosthetic is appropriate, we create a precise model of the dog's limb:

  • Creating a fiberglass tape cast of the limb to capture exact anatomical details
  • 3D scanning the cast to create an accurate digital model
  • Documentation of the dog's gait and movement patterns
  • Assessment of weight distribution and balance

This casting and scanning process is crucial for creating a prosthetic that fits perfectly, distributes weight properly, and provides the right level of support.

3

3D Modeling & Prototyping

Using the 3D scan of the cast, our team designs a custom prosthetic:

  • Creation of a detailed digital 3D model tailored to the dog's specific anatomy
  • Selection of appropriate materials based on the dog's size, weight, and activity level
  • Design of attachment mechanisms that are secure yet comfortable
  • 3D printing of prototypes for testing and refinement

This stage often involves multiple iterations as we refine the design to ensure optimal fit, comfort, and functionality. Each prosthetic costs between 250-300 euros for small animals, 350-400 euros for medium animals, and 450-500 euros for large animals (90% less than traditional prosthetics). While we offer these commercially to owners who can afford them, we provide them at no cost to qualified individuals with financial constraints and animal shelters through our subsidized program, ensuring all dogs have access to mobility solutions.

4

Fitting & Adjustments

Once the prototype is ready, we schedule a fitting session:

  • Initial fitting to assess comfort and proper alignment
  • Observation of the dog's movement with the prosthetic
  • Identification of any pressure points or areas needing adjustment
  • Refinement of the design based on the fitting results

This process may require several sessions as we make adjustments to ensure the prosthetic fits perfectly and allows for natural movement. We take the time to get it right, as a proper fit is crucial for the dog's comfort and the prosthetic's effectiveness.

5

Training & Adaptation

Once the final prosthetic is ready, we work with the dog and owner on adaptation:

  • Gradual introduction to wearing the prosthetic for increasing periods
  • Guided exercises to help the dog learn to use the prosthetic effectively
  • Training for the owner on proper application, removal, and care
  • Regular check-ins to monitor progress and address any issues

Adaptation is a critical phase that requires patience and consistency. Most dogs need time to adjust to their new prosthetic, but with proper training and support, they can achieve remarkable mobility and independence.

6

Follow-up & Support

Our commitment doesn't end with delivery of the prosthetic:

  • Regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress
  • Adjustments or modifications as the dog grows or their needs change
  • Ongoing support for the owner with any questions or concerns
  • Maintenance and replacement of prosthetic components as needed

We maintain a long-term relationship with each dog and owner, ensuring the prosthetic continues to provide optimal support throughout the dog's life. This ongoing care is all provided free of charge, thanks to our donors.

Donor Recognition

Each prosthetic we create costs between 200-300 euros to produce (90% less than traditional prosthetics). Your donations help us provide these at no cost to shelters and owners facing financial constraints through our subsidized program, ensuring that no dog is denied mobility due to financial limitations.

As a token of our appreciation, donors who contribute over 50 euros get their name engraved on a prosthetic, becoming a permanent part of a dog's journey to mobility.
